Overview
Use ai.ml from coding agents, editors and chat apps, with the settings each one needs.
Any tool that lets you change an OpenAI, Anthropic or Gemini base URL can use ai.ml. What differs between tools is which of the three APIs each one speaks, where its settings live, and how it names models.
| The tool speaks | Base URL to give it | Key goes in |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Chat Completions or Responses | https://api.ai.ml/v1 | Authorization: Bearer |
| Anthropic Messages | https://api.ai.ml (the client adds /v1) | Authorization: Bearer or x-api-key |
Gemini generateContent | https://api.ai.ml (the client adds /v1beta) | x-goog-api-key |
Naming models
Every model has an id, vendor/model, such as anthropic/claude-sonnet-4.6. Most also have an alias, the name the vendor itself uses, such as claude-sonnet-4-6 or gpt-5. The gateway accepts either on every route.
Use the alias when a tool decides what a model can do from its name. Claude Code and the Gemini CLI both do this. The Gemini API also puts the model in a single URL segment, so that route needs the alias.
GET /v1/models lists every model. Tools that can fetch a model list read it there.
One command for the coding agents
npx @aiml/cli setup configures Claude Code, Codex, the Gemini CLI and OpenClaw, whichever of them you have installed. It checks your key and model against the API before writing anything, keeps a copy of every file it changes, and aiml restore puts those files back. The guides below show what it writes, for setting a tool up by hand.

Each guide says how it was checked: run against ai.ml with the version named, or read against the tool's documentation on the date given.
Before you start
- Create a key in the console's Keys page. Give it a budget if a tool will run unattended: an agent loop spends until something stops it.
- A key's model lists apply to whatever name a tool sends. A key that denies a model refuses it by its id and by its alias alike.
- The response headers (
x-aiml-request-id,x-aiml-cost-micro) and the console's request view show what each call did and cost, whichever tool made it.
